Brake Services
While you may not think about them very often, your vehicle's brakes are a very important safety feature that should always be kept in top working order.
How Do Car Brakes Work?
There are many steps and individual parts that work together to slow your car down and bring it to a stop. When you press down on the brake pedal, a master cylinder sends brake fluid through the brake lines to each wheel. At the wheels, the brake fluid activates the brake pads. These pads press down on the spinning rotors, which slows your vehicle and eventually brings it to a stop. While some vehicles have even more in-depth systems that use sensors to operate the braking system, the effect is still the same.
How Do I Know When My Brakes Need to be Serviced?
Since the brake pads use friction to slow down and stop your car, they'll eventually start to wear down and need to be replaced. The brake pads are the most common part of your braking system that needs to be replaced, although sometimes the brake lines or rotors also need repairs done. When you're driving your car, it's important to pay attention to the following warning signs:
- Squealing or grinding noise when braking
- Car pulls to one side when braking
- Brake system's warning light comes on while driving
- Brake pedal feels soft when you press down
- You feel a vibration or pulsating when braking
Any of these signs could mean it's time to have your brakes serviced.
